Pacific West Coast North America

From the torrid jungle of Panama to the frozen wastes of Alaska, this region encompasses a vast array of cruising areas as well as some of the most famous yachting centers in the world.
Spanning the north of the American continent, this region has many cruising grounds on the western Pacific coast.
On this coast, British Columbia boasts one of the most beautiful and dramatic cruising grounds in the world with its snowcapped mountains, waterfalls cascading down rugged cliffs, a myriad of islands and quiet, still fjords. The 100-mile long Vancouver Island protects most of the mainland from the Pacific Ocean and so creates an inland sea. Dotted with islands and spiked with inlets, the absence of swell can provide great sailing conditions.
The most popular cruising area is the Gulf Islands in the south. There are harbours and anchorages on both sides of the Strait of Georgia, which separates Vancouver Island from the mainland.
Another good cruising area is at the north of the Strait, where a cluster of islands border the magnificant Desolation Sound. North of this begins the inside passage to Alaska.
Further southward to Mexico you will find an ancient culture, a vibrant atmosphere unmatched anywhere else in Latin America and a landscape of varied scenery from the high mountains of the interior to the silvery beaches lapped by the Pacific Ocean. A very intersting cruising are is the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez).
In Costa Rica, lying between Nicaragua and Panama, the most popular port of call is Golfito. From there, 300 miles offshore in the Pacific, you will find the exciting fabled treasure island of Coco with an amazing birdlife and underwater scenery teeming with fish.
